Ray Donaldson

Ray Donaldson is a native of Rome graduating from East Rome High School and later played for the University of Georgia. In 1980, Ray was the second-round draft choice from UGA with the Indianapolis Colts and was with the team when it moved from Baltimore in 1984.

Ray Donaldson broke new ground in the NFL becoming the first African-American to play the center position.

During his 17-year pro career with the NFL, he played 244 games - 13 years with the Indiana Colts, 2 years with the Seattle Seahawks and 2 years with the Dallas Cowboys.

In 1993, he ranked third in franchise history in games played (184) behind only quarterback John Unitas (221) and punter David Lee (188).

Donaldson, considered one of the NFL’s best run-blockers during his career, was voted to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 1986-1989 and started the last three. He also started 168 games, including a streak of 152 non-strike games from 1981 until he sustained an injury in the third game of the 1991 season.

He was All Pro for six years, Super Bowl Champion and Nominee of the NFL Hall of Fame. He was the starting center on the Cowboys’ 1995 Super Bowl championship team.

In 2006, Ray was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, inMacon Georgia.
